India disappointed

UN General Assembly's failure to reach an agreement on reforms in Security Council in its 70th anniversary has left India disappointed. The decision of the UNGA has dampened the India's hopes for a permanent seat in UN Security Council while the members of G4 group, working for expanding the Council's permanent membership, expressed their displeasure over  the inability of the UN to implement long-pending reform on the powerful Council. However,   the Assembly on Wednesday took a consensus decision to continue the discussion on reforming the Security Council during its 71st session.

Lamenting over the UN decision, Brazil's envoy to the UN Antonio de Aguiar Patriota,  said "There was huge expectation that time had arrived for us to move into concrete negotiations, It is unfortunate that the 70th anniversary of the UN was not able to build up momentum with a view to reaching an agreement on this important item."

It may be mentioned here that the reform process of the Security Council had gained momentum last year when the General Assembly adopted a negotiating text overcoming the constant opposition from a small group of countries.  The process was also supported by many member Nations as they wanted increase in number of Security Council members.

India has been playing a significant role against violence in any form world over and its contributions to UN Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKO) is also remarkable. Moreover, as a growing economic super power, India has been donating to several UN organs like the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF).  Therefore, the UN should recognize India as  global super power and pave the way for  the country to become a permanent member of  the Council so that  it can play an important role towards global peace and security.

Killer drugs and social degeneration

Dear Editor,

There are several things that drain the very core strength of a society. The rampant drug abuse by young people is certainly one of them. Yes, many households have their own shares of worries with respect to drug abuse by their children. But they are forced to silently endure them all.

No strange, a lot many adolescents in the towns have taken to this bad habit for various other reasons.  The company that one associates with is one of the crucial factors. Well, a good company is always a blessing for an individual, it facilitates for his overall well-being, while the bad company is a huge curse. Most of the youths are usually drawn to substance abuse due to wrong folks they keep as company.  The peer pressure is a real bane of the adolescent life, and this is how many fall in a trap.  Another bleak aridity in which such habit finds its expression is the unemployment or passivity. An idle mind usually looks for idle sense indulgences. No denying, with the roar of hedonism permeating the society the will power of our youths to “say no” to such dopes has gone virtually downhill.

This aside, an easy availability of illegal drugs is what allows this evil thrive more vigorously. No sweating, no perspiration to catch hold of a drug peddler as in the past. Here a cellphone pulls down the mountain of hurdles. Just by mere texting a message the stuff is delivered at one’s home. The recent Bollywood film ‘Udta Panjab’ has brought out into the open how such underhand deals come off. It also boldly exposed how foxy the big leaders are who without any qualms get involved in what we citizens can hardly ever imagine. Yes, they stoop to the gutter level to fulfill their self-centered missions. Thus, they drug the society only to remain in power or become richer.

The drug abuse and its trafficking are becoming the biggest challenges to the country. Even in this technologically advanced age the government is literally failed to curb the increasing demand and supply of such life-taking drugs.  Of course, the stick of the police to clamp down on the suppliers might be achieved to some extent if the government agencies would put concerted efforts. But, to knock down the awful habit of the misled youths needs a whole lot of efforts and perseverance. The healthy environment in the society is a must for which the government should roll up its sleeves.

The value-based education, what we are so badly bankrupt of these days, is indeed very essential. Many past addicts have fervently confessed that if they were shown the right path and inspired with a fair doses of homilies, and if their parents were a little strict and loving, they would not at all have fallen for such dangerous stimulants. Also, an effective method to combat the drug abuse is through the right teaching of one’s religious values as it is often the most recommended course. Those who do not consider the religion/God as important are three times likelier to use the substance to get high, as per surveys. By seeking the refuge in God the most of the addicts have finally reformed themselves. Interestingly, raising the level inner spiritualism through meditation and Yoga is clinically tested and has been extensively used these days by many rehabilitation centers across the world.

The bottom line is that the parents/guardians must be extra watchful. Keeping in view the deepening chaos in the society the parental responsibilities are higher now than ever before.

Give them a chance

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the WRD authorities. My application for the post of J.E (civil) has been rejected citing the reason as the applicant's name does not tally with the documents. The department when enquired told us that we would be receiving a mail from them with the reason and the PDF of the rejected form. As far as I know, I have still not received it. Even SSC, a central govt.dept is giving a chance to the CGL exam applicants to rectify their online application form for which the exam is being conducted in the next month. If central govt authorities can give a chance to rectify, why can't our state govt do the same? So I would like to request to please let the rejected candidates to sit for the examination and let it be a lesson learnt by all.

Yours,

An aggrieved aspirant

No network

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteem daily, it is to inform the concern authority that BSNL network of Riga Circle of Siang District is not working since last eight months. And even BSNL tower of this circle is not independently working; it has to depend on another tower i.e. from Gekku or Jinging of Upper Siang District. For this reason, public of this circle are compelled to cover a distance of 20-60 km to make a call to their kids who are studying elsewhere and those who are staying outside also find it difficult to contact back home. So concern public of this area hereby appeals the concern authority to look into the matter as soon as possible.

Yours,

R.Talom

Readers forum

Dear Editor,

At times I doubt my moderate command over English language whenever the letter from one person cover the valuable page of Readers Forum.

I am not sure if it is the bombastic vocabulary or his/her idea of connecting cosmos, god and universe with every issue of human life that is prohibiting me to grasp his/her contents.

Readers forum being my favourite page where the real media-public interface takes place, I request to yours esteemed daily to refrain from publication of issues which are out of context from the Arunachal's point of view. Because masses turn to Arunachal Times to get the news of state. Only publish the letters which are to the point, less complicated and that can be understood by masses as Arunachal Times is the most popular newspaper of Arunachal.

Yours,

Confused citizen
